Sculpturades

While I was in another room folding laundry, one of the little ones in the house was busy....

can you guess who it was?

HINT: she has opposable thumbs!

(and in case you were wondering, the butter did not get smeared into everything, it was all ingested~ less to clean up at least!)

Special Memento

Dr. Daddy arranged a very special birthday evening for me earlier this month. It included roses, and about a week after my birthday there was a seller on Etsy who needed some help for an idea she was testing. All it involved was sending her a couple of roses priority mail. Her idea was to see how they would travel through the mail. Well it turns out they traveled well enough. She took them and turned one of the petals into this beautiful pendant. Isn't it pretty? If ever you're looking for a very special memory gift- valentine's Day, wedding, mother's day, birth of baby- consider LesTroisGrenouilles. (She didn't pay me to advertise for her, I just really like the ideaand the final product!)

*and kudos to Dr. Daddy for arranging a fun birthday!

Mini vacation

Dr. Daddy has had (and will continue to have) a fair number of trips for work between August and say, February. Eirena and I have had some wonderful bonding moments... there's nothing like eating dark chocolate and watching The Very Hungry Caterpillar for mother- daughter bonding. But I have also been a little weary, especially since this has mostly happened since our move, and thus without a lot of the support that I had back in AZ.
Dr. Daddy, wisely and loving picked up on this feeling (as well as the realization that I had never spent a night away from Eirena in all her two years of life). So he arranged to have a little vacation for me. - He got to go along as well, which suited me just fine. Eirena got to spend quality time with her Tayta and Dr. Daddy and I got to spend some quality time together too.
Eirena did fabulously being away from us although her smile when she saw us again was priceless. And I had fun going to a museum and being able to look at the exhibits without worrying about where the kid was hiding or climbing.

Psychologists and the dog

Two unrelated anecdotes:
Yesterday we had our "interview" with the psychologist for the adoption. The first time we went to see him, he gave us an objective test. Then he handed us a 7+ page questionnaire all about our lives. We did our best to fill it out in seriousness but there were some questions for which it was very hard to resist adding a little snark. But back to the interview.

He was flipping through our profiles while we sat in uncomfortable silence. Then he looks up and says, "Jeannette, your profile reads like you were playing your cards close. Are you a private person usually?" I was a little surprised because I thought I had been relatively open with the questions, which made me think...dude you want closed from me? you have no idea...
But anyway, so I admitted that yes, in fact I am generally a private person.
So then the very next question from him was, "do you have any compulsions?" I'm sorry? Did you not miss the fact that I am, in fact, a private person, and you are a complete stranger? Why would I admit that to you? In fact, I do not have compulsions primarily because I am too lazy to be compulsive, but even if I did, I doubt I would admit it to you.
Well rather than unload my internal dialogue on the complete stranger I chose the more private option of looking at him blankly and shaking my head. Dr. Daddy also looked bewildered by the thought of me have compulsions and had we been in another setting I think we would have found the question (with regards to me) pretty funny. In the end he gave us "two thumbs up", so that is one more hurdle crossed.

Second anecdote, as I was scrolling up and down the screen on the computer, Uc was tracking it and her little head was tilted to the side inquisitively, moving up and down with the page. Then she tried to figure out where the music was coming from and nearly slobbered on the speakers.

* I just want to be clear that I am not looking down on or criticizing people that have compulsions. But rather, very often with adoption any form of mental illness can disqualify you or at the very least make the process even harder than it already is. Also, as my wise father once told me,
" you're like me... we're phlegmatics, it takes to much energy to do_____(in this case, have a compulsion)".

Little Climber

While Dr. Daddy was chopping firewood for us for yet another sub 40 F day, Eirena decided to go climbing.

She got up all all on her own-

and was very pleased with herself

A Dilemma

I have a dilemma: we have a cement floor downstairs which attracts dirt and fur like tape. Yesterday and today are wet and rainy days, but the floor needs to be cleaned. Now the dog is mostly house broken, which is great, but that means that she needs to go outside. (And come back in.) And the weather is actually warm (for two days) so the kid needs to go outside (and come back in). I should mention that yesterday the dog and the child worked in close collaboration to make a mud puddle across the breadth of the sidewalk right before you climb the steps, so there is no avoiding mud.
So my dilemma is this:
should I wash my floor, since it needs it, only to see the satisfaction of a clean floor be instantly dirtied?
should I ignore the fact that the floor needs to be cleaned and wait until all things in the universe are perfect before I touch it?
should I clean, clean and clean some more?
should I clean it once and then pretend that I stenciled/painted dirty paw and foot prints onto the floor for decoration?

what would you do?

trust and obey

It seems pretty clear that God cares about the "underdog". Not in a trample-the-victor type of way, but he cares about the poor, the widow, the orphan, the aliens in the land. He asks us as his people to care about them too.
I am part of a yahoo group for Christian adoptive parents. It is such an encouraging group, both in the way the people uplift each other, and the amazing stories of walls (of bureaucracy and stupidity) being broken down to give a child a home.
This past weekend Dr. Daddy and I were applying for grants for the adoption. We had to tally up the total projected cost- I still don't want to think about the fairly realistic number we came up with. Let's just say, its equivalent to about a year of graduate school, out of state tuition, no TA or RA-ship. Yeah. Gulp! I heard the number and immediately felt my spirit crash. I felt overwhelmed. How on earth would we come up with the money? (This isn't exactly the best time to be asking for grants!)
The next day I was reading messages from the yahoo group. One of the ladies, in response to someone else, said something that super poked me. This is what she said:
We pray for Him to show us His path. When He has given us an answer, we just
know....there is no doubt. Ohhhh Satan will work on you afterwards...was it
from God?Are you REALLY sure? Maybe it was just you, what you wanted. If you
had that moment of clarity with God then trust that the Spirit that resides
inside you recognized it and don't let Satan try to make you doubt. He's worked
on me the same way...trying to make me doubt the answer that God has given.
Sometimes, if you haven't had that moment of clarity the answer is just...wait.
It is hard for me to believe that we are spending (or will be soon) so much money when it is easier and cheaper to have a biological child. But God has pretty clearly shown us this is the route he wants us to take. It is so easy for Satan to use finances to make me doubt God's will. But then, God can easily use little reminders like someone posting on a yahoo group to affirm my trust in His will. I don't know where the money is coming from, but if this is what he wants, he will provide it.

A Book!

I went to the library last week and I found this book. I think it is very cool. I am so excited I found it. I showed it to Dr. Daddy and tried to be very interested, but I got the feeling he wouldn't have picked it up if it were him spotting it on the library shelf.
Maybe it is only really cool to those strange people that get excited about receiving paper as a birthday/Christmas present. Who on earth would get excited about receiving paper? Who would ask for paper?

Oh wait, that would be me.

Love language or phase?

Eirena has started this thing where she periodically checks in with me, "'Ena good girl?". "Yes, Eirena is a good girl." She particularly does this after I have told her that some specific behavior was naughty. Then she checks in until she is told she is a good girl. But she also will just randomly ask if she is a good girl.
So what I'm wondering is, is this just some developmental phase? Or is she showing early signs of her primary love language being words of affirmation?
Or am I just over analyzing this because I have nothing better to do?

On the bus

While Eirena doesn't have quite the organizational skills as her cousin, she has taken to lining things up on the arm of the couch. It is her bus, and her letters, animals, trains and other toys all ride on the bus. They all face the same direction and generally are perfectly spaced (until Uc knocks them over). In this picture the animals are riding the bus to the zoo.

Special Day

Eirena had a busy birthday on Saturday here are some pictures:

walking to the bus stop

waiting for the bus to take us to a park
(it would have been MUCH quicker to drive, but Eirena likes riding the bus)

at the park there is a little train that Eirena got to ride on
-she was very excited and soaking it all in

waiting to get zooming

after her nap she woke up and saw her birthday present (yes Baker's we shamelessly were inspired by Abraham's tricycle!) - initially she was more excited about the balloons

but she rode it to another playground and soon became very thrilled with it

the next day she got to wear her birthday dress to church (she choose the shoes)
the green bangles are ones she got when she was born!

This just in!

Efendim finally has a spine! After two months of having Uc chase him around, nuzzle his ears and generally try to play pounce with our most skittish of cats, Efendim had enough.

I was sitting here ever so serenely reading blogs and checking email when I heard yelping from Uc. She raced around the living room and kitchen and yelped some more. And then I heard hissing. I saw Uc cowering by the back door flinching at the mere presence of the hissing, swatting black cat. Uc darted by Efendim as quickly as she could to avoid the wrath of the cat and came running onto the couch to sit next to me in "safety". Efendim sits boldly in the middle of the kitchen floor, having finally developed a little backbone.

I love it when they fight!

Imagination

I was putting Eirena's car seat in the car before we went grocery shopping. I got it in, and went to go get her and this is what I saw:

Unsure of what was going on, I asked Eirena what she was doing. Very pleased with herself, she told me "mud swinging high up to the sky". Imaginative play has begun... I think we're going to have fun with this stage!

All grown up

Two years ago today I was very pregnant. I was taking the day off from trying to naturally induced labor. We had no idea if the baby was a boy or girl.

One year ago our little girl was in the early stages of walking. She could make some sounds, but not actually talk. She certainly couldn't stand still long enough for me to take a good picture.

Today, that little baby is walking around the kitchen in my high heels, talking a mile a minute about Peter Rabbit, Curious George, buses and cats.

Now she will stop and pose for a picture.

Isn't she stylish?

ACK! What's that?

Very cold white stuff came out of the sky last night. I realize for SOME people this is a normal occurrence. We, however, have tried to base our life around climates that don't promote that behavior.

This and That

*Today and tomorrow Dr. Daddy and I have our psychological evaluations for adopting. Oh what fun that's going to be. I have never been to a psychologist before- anyone have any tips?

*I finally did it! I'm feeling rather proud of myself more because we haven't been building up to it, but I just decided to plunge in. And I am still walking today. :)

*Eirena knows all the 8 colors of a standard marker packet. Now she is learning fuchsia and magenta - "miss genta".

*Yesterday Eirena was playing with her magnetic letters, naming them aloud when I heard her say, " F, U". Oops! Totally innocent on her part, but at the wrong playground it could be misconstrued. Good thing that happened at home.

*Also yesterday Eirena wanted to play with her bubbles. So we took them outside and of course the dog had to follow. As Eirena blew the bubbles, Uc tried to catch them. Great amusement all around.

* On Sunday we took Eirena to a Living Nativity. It wasn't a walk-through, but rather a dramatization of the nativity story. It wasn't as impressive as ones we've been to before (yes, the ones my brothers were involved in were unquestionably the best we've been to). But at the end of it you could pet all the animals. There were sheep, goats, camels, a little calf and a miniature pony (as big/small as Eirena). As you might imagine Eirena had a great time petting, hugging and feeding all the animals.

* I had to interrupt typing this to lift Eirena up to the window to watch the trash truck come by. She has become very fascinated by it.

Hooray!

"The nice social worker said she will approve mommy and Dr. daddy's homestudy and write the report up this week! I'm going to get a sibling!"

Pictures from St. Nicholas Day

Eirena found stickers

and markers

and crayons in her stocking.

And colored these pictures of St. Nicholas with her new markers.

On this page she actually was coloring specific items specific colors- it was fun to watch her actually stick to just coloring (for example) the sack (brown) as opposed to scribbling all over the page!

-and yes, she does have on pink pajamas- they are warm and she thinks they are fabulous :)

Slightly new twist on an old trick

The way I heard the story from Dr. Daddy, is that Dr. Daddy and his older brother would be eating ice cream. Older brother would rapidly finish his, and then sweetly cajole generous Dr. Daddy into sharing his ice cream with his poor older brother who no longer had any ice cream. Of course innocent Dr. Daddy would comply. That's the way I heard it, at least.

Well last night we were having some of that yummy pumpkin ice cream (by special request of Eirena!). She rapidly finished hers. She looked around the table. And then sweetly asked to sit in Dr. Daddy's lap. And then sweetly asked for some of his ice cream. And he generously (but not innocently) obliged.

But then, who could resist this face?

Families

I just finished reading the book Attaching in Adoption by Deborah Gray. It was a very fascinating and incredibly depressing read. Gray, a clinical social worker, talks about how adopted kids often have stunted emotional growth because of lack of, loss, or interruptions in their attachment to their parental figure. She described many of the problems and gave a lot of suggestions for parents to work through them.
But she also described normal emotional development and attaching, something that often is taken for granted unless there is a problem. (Or unless you're currently dealing with separation anxiety and calm yourself by knowing that it is just a phase of growing up!) While many of her suggestions will probably be useful once Eirena's sibling joins our family, for now I am just thankful.
I am thankful for families, stable ones where many children can grow emotionally and be appropriately attached. I am thankful for resilient children that can learn to attach when they come to a forever home. I am thankful for parents that are willing to develop this in their child. But most of all, I am thankful for my family.
Because my upbringing was so blessed, I didn't really have to think about these issues (in a personal way). I was not the unwanted child of unaffected parents. I was not the 'oops' of teenagers. I was not born with alcohol or drugs in my bloodstream. My parents didn't give up on me. They were not too poor to care for me. It really isn't something to take for granted.

Nearly two

In a little under two weeks, Eirena will turn two. My how times flies. So here are some of her accomplishments of the past year:
She started walking just before her first birthday, but now she REALLY walks, and runs too. And she can walk 2 km, if she wants to/ is motivated enough. Her run has developed from all arms and legs in every direction to a little more controlled. She also has started to jump, which is fun to see.

She talks! My how this kid talks. Generally the more tired she gets, the more she talks. She loves to hear and tell stories. Current favorites are about when the smoke alarm went off and riding the bus. She also loves to repeat the stories from her books and can often quot pages at a time. Current book favorites are on the sidebar.

Eirena really enjoys coloring and playing with her bus/trucks. And playing in the dirt, but that is not anything new :) She likes to pretend she's cooking (with fennel) or actually help me cook. And she is starting to really learn to help out around the house- sweeping, mopping and putting certain items from the dishwasher away. But for her, the more time she can spend outside, the happier she is!

Eirena can count up to 20 and generally say all her ABC's- there are a few missing sometimes. She seems to recognize E, W, X, Z, and A. Occasionally she will recognize some of the others, but it isn't consistent.

She is generally pretty laid back. She loves people and eagerly anticipates Sundays and Wednesday to go to the nursery. She does have a bit of a stubborn streak though -let's just say she comes by that very naturally.

She only recently learned the word "chocolate" (can you believe that we kept her deprived for so long?) It didn't take long for her to learn the difference between "chalk" and "chocolate". Today I had a few chocolate chips in my hand after giving her some. She spied them pretty quickly, but was content with her own. Until she ate them all up. Then she pried open my hands and kept looking all over them for the chocolate chips.

She has a little trouble saying her "l" and "r" sound, it usually comes out "w". So she says things like 'howey spiwit' (holy spirit) and 'hawwowed' (hallowed)- I think it is pretty cute.

Yesterday we were diving home from the store (at night) and there was some sort of accident on the road. There were FIRE TRUCKS and AMBULANCES and they had on their flashy lights. Oh boy! Eirena was very excited to see that. I felt a little bad about encouraging her joy of seeing the flashy lights and trucks, knowing they were there because others were hurt, but then, she is not quite two, I figure she'll have plenty of time to learn about those sorts of things.

Very Yummy!

The Nourishing Gourmet: Decadent Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream

I made this for our Thanksgiving celebration. Everyone that tried it, liked it, so either they're all a bunch of fibbers, or it really is good. I'm going for the latter! I tastes sort of like apumpkin spice latte, except cold.

We really do live in a city...

although sometimes I question that. This morning I was drinking my cup of bliss (coffee, obviously!) and looking at the sunrise. I was watching the trees blowing in the wind and then something caught my eye- something up high in the branches of the tree. And then it looked up and I saw the characteristic "mask" face of a raccoon! I pointed it out to Dr. Daddy and then we watched it sniff in a bird's nest, and then climb down the tree.

To date I have also seen possum routing around in the backyard and one morning even disturbed a family of deer that came to graze on our fresh grass. They also turn our motion lights on at night. I have also seen cardinals and blue jays flitting from one tree to the next. And, one day walking with Eirena to the library I saw a fox walking down a street in the middle of the afternoon!

And now for some shameless self-promotion....
well actually I shouldn't say "shameless" but I digress- in an effort to raise some money for our adoption, we are trying to sell some stuff. So check out sofyaswords and tell anyone you think might be interested!

He's home!

Dr. Daddy came home Tuesday night- hurrah! Eirena was VERY excited to see him.
Also exciting is that Dr. Daddy had a layover in Seattle and used his time wisely.
You see, less than 4 miles from the airport is a Trader Joe's. Oh yeah! Dr. Daddy brought home yummies from TJ's: peppermint bark, candy cane Joe Joe's, CHOCOLATE, chili mango and other such treats. So we're all set for treats and chocolate for a while.

The day after Dr. Daddy got home we had our first meeting with our social worker for our homestudy. It was pretty much a 50 minute interview (per person) that went over our life history. (And then we moved...) The next step is the home visit which is scheduled for Dec. 6th. It is kind of exciting to actually feel like we're progressing on the adoption.

More cheap entertainment!

1. Get a newspaper ad flyer in the mail.2. Give it to small child to read, especially the pictures of cars and helicopters.

3. Small child will then hide under the newspaper.

4. You "find" the "hidden" child.

5. You are then rewarded with grins and giggles.

6. Repeat.

And this is the fun we had before the dog or cats got the paper- they just take it to a whole new level!

Sniffles and hacks

Eirena and I both came down with a cold. She has the chest congestion, I have the nose/sinus stuff.
Clearly the only reasonable thing to do is have her go to sleep (even though she is chipper) and for me to curl up with a cup of tea and some dark chocolate. That's right, forget the chicken soup, go straight for the chocolate. It has antioxidants, you know!

Pumpkin

In an effort to be economical, healthy and wise I decided that instead of buying canned pumpkin for my holiday cooking, I would buy a pumpkin. I'll let you in on a secret: I actually don't like pumpkin! I like pumpkin pie (when heavily spiced) or pumpkin flavored lattes (when heavily spiced) or pumpkin bread (when heavily spiced) but not straight pumpkin. So I actually have never bought a pumpkin. Now I have done a little reading and knew that there were different types of pumpkins. And I even thought I knew what kind to get for baking. So I went to the store prepared to buy an approximately 4 lb pumpkin, cinderella variety.

Well at my grocery store, they didn't have pumpkins. They had oodles of squash, but no pumpkin. Only something that looked like a pumpkin that was called Calabasa (Spanish name but no translation). Well it looked pumpkin-like so I chose the smallest one that they had, felt it, it felt pretty light, and stuck it in my cart. I was a little worried that it maybe wasn't quite 4 lbs but figured if not, I would get by with the amount I had. When I was checking out (with my three cloth bags plus a pumpkin) the bagging lady wished me enjoyment of my pumpkin (to which I almost responded, "oh, so it is a pumpkin?" but then I was glad I didn't) and then corrected herself and called it a squash.

So now I wasn't sure I had a pumpkin, and I wasn't sure it was even 4 lbs. Time to turn to wikipedia! After much searching I determined that I had most likely bought something in the broad pumpkin family and that it might even be a cheese pumpkin which is excellent for baking. So I baked it last night. My there was a lot of pumpkin. This morning I pureed it all. My there was a lot of pumpkin. I made the pumpkin pie spiced ice cream that I intended to make with some of the puree and it smelled pretty good. And there was still a lot leftover. No worries on running short of pumpkin.

I looked at the grocery slip just for kicks to see how much my "light" pumpkin weighed- um 10.64 lbs. (I think I need to stop carrying the kid around.) So we have A LOT of pumpkin puree.

Did I mention I only like pumpkin when it is heavily spiced?

Just so you know it hasn't been all dreary with Dr. Daddy gone! Eirena sure enjoyed her personal "spa treatment".

Grocery bags

I try to remember to take my cloth bags with me when I go grocery shopping. I usually remember 90% of the time. I go to the same store on the same day of the week at approximately the same time of day (yes, I'm a creature of habit). Well in AZ if I put my cloth bags on the conveyor belt and then all my groceries it was clearly understood that I wanted my cloth bags to be used first. Apparently that isn't so clear here (at least where I shop).

Last week there was no bagger person, so it was the cashier and me. He started pulling out the plastic bags but then looked up and saw me loading stuff into the cloth ones and said, "oh, you want to use cloth". I really bit my tongue in an effort to avoid the sarcastic response that was ready to spew forth.

This week, I followed my routine again- bags on the conveyor belt, then groceries. There were three bagging ladies, plus the cashier. The first bagging lady understood the implications of the bags. She loaded up one bag, then left. Another lady started to bag, pulling out the plastic bags. I asked her to please use the cloth. Then the third lady placed my milk in the cart, not in a bag. I asked her to please place the milk in the third cloth bag. (By this time the second bagging lady had finished her bag and disappeared.) So the milk went in the bag. Now there were two packages of meat, a carton of veg. stock and a small jar left on the belt. The third bagging lady looks at the milk in the bag and then looks at me blankly and asked, "well where do you want the rest of this stuff?" I told her very nicely that it would all fit into the cloth bag - not only was there plenty of room, but cloth bags are also much stronger than flimsy plastic grocery bags. She honestly look surprised that I could fit all my groceries into 3 cloth bags.

Apparently at this store they are a little unclear on the concept of cloth grocery bags.

Who is Who?

Simple Pleasures

I'm a cheapskate. I admit it. I balk at how much things costs, especially entertainment. So here is an incomplete list of things that we do for free or almost free.

1) go to the park
2) go to the library - she thinks this is a great outing, almost as good as the park
3) go to the mall (it used to be fun in Tucson when they had kiddie play area, here we just ride the escalators)
4) ride the bus ($1.50 for a full day's tour of the city!)
5) go to church and Bible study (ok, that isn't the primary reason we go, but Eirena really likes being able to play with the other kids)
6) ride Dr. Daddy's bicycle (Eirena steers as Dr. Daddy pushes)
7) walk up to the fire station and look cute so the firemen will let Eirena climb up and drive it (Eirena looks cute- just to clarify!)
8) go to Costco on Saturday when they have lots of samples
9) go running (Eirena likes moving at a speed faster than she can walk but still able to absorb all the sights around her)
10) go to the museums etc. on free days
11) go to the thrift store, especially when they are having 50% off!

Now you tell me what you do (or would do) for free (with or without kids)!

Obviously I limited this to things outside the house, and it is Eirena oriented, but I'd like to hear your thoughts for single, married, kids, no-kids free stuff.

The Truth about Cats and Dogs

A while ago when I wasn't sleeping, I tried to bore myself with thinking about the ways cats and dogs are different. So if you are suffering from insomnia, read on!

1) Cats are just naturally more graceful- they jump gracefully, land on their feet and look dainty, even fat cats. Dogs apparently don't have the innate ability to land on their feet. If they are 'dumped' out of your arms, they go splat.
2) Cats have an innate sense of dignity. So you tricked them into running into the wall? Well, as they shake their paw at you, they really intended to do it. Dogs... yeah they have no qualms about smashing into a wall to get a ball, who cares how stupid they look, they are having fun!
3) Dogs just have way more energy, hands down. Even Berji, when she was her most playful kittenish self (doing commando under the coffee table) has nothing on the boundless energy of the dog. We take this dog for a 5 km run and after a brief nap is wound up all over again.
4) Cats really are cleaner than dogs. I even observed our monster black cat (Efendim) washing his face using their water dish- that explains why there is always so much black hair in the dish.
5) Dogs have way more adventurous taste buds (at least ours does!) Apples, sure. Green beans, mmm, cat turds, oooh now there's a treat. Even Berji does not eat other animals' turd!

But the real truth about cats and dogs is that they both look utterly ridiculous, but oh-so-very-cute splayed out napping on their backs!

Here's to warrior princess Berji (7lbs), rambuctious, goofy Uc (11lbs) and monster cat Efendim (13 lbs)!

Big Girl

Just a quick update to let you know that Eirena is 28 lbs 12 oz (13 kg) and 35 inches. What is it they say about doubling the height the child is at age 2? I doubt she will be nearly 6 ft. tall! She certainly is heavy though!

I'm not sure I want to know details about the thought that inspired that look

Eirena was waving a stick around- Uc thought she must want to play

almost ready to walk 1 km back!
