Dr. Daddy was kindly making eggs for lunch last week. He made a huge omelet so I asked him if he finished up the eggs. He assured me he hadn't, which was good because I needed them for something else. So I looked in the fridge for them. I couldn't see them. I double checked that he put them in the fridge. he assured me he had put them away. I looked again. I didn't see them where we normally keep them. Nor did I see them anywhere else, logical or not. I asked him again if there were in fact any left, and if so, where they might be. (We had already checked the counters.) He was sure he had left some. But he couldn't find them in the fridge either. Pausing to think for a minute, he said, "I put them away, unless I put them in the cupboard." He opened the cupboard that stores our plastic containers and sure enough, on the shelf next to the rectangle and square boxes was the carton of eggs.
Later that evening he was pouring water for us and as he was returning the jug (to the fridge normally) he started to open the cupboard (yes, the same cupboard that he put the eggs into). But he stopped himself, and, according to him, the only reason he caught himself was because the jug didn't fit on the shelf! I think someone needs to get some more sleep.
You know you're married to a geologist when you're watching a movie and the thing he notices from a scene is "nice turbidites".

Our Experiment
Dr. Daddy and I decided to do an experiment. For the past month we have bought no meat. I know for some of you this is fairly standard :) but we actually do like meat and still eat it, we just haven't bought any. Or rather, I haven't cooked any. We're not actually going vegetarian. But we would, theoretically, like to buy better meat (organic/ local/ grass-fed/free-range/hormone & antibiotic-free, etc. etc.) but have you seen how much that costs? It makes sense that quality comes at a price, but we only bought meat before when it was under $2/lb. So even thinking about something over $5/lb is outrageous. So we decided to see if we didn't buy meat at the grocery store, how that would impact our grocery budget, and if it saved us money, use that to buy better meat less often. It also is a bit of a fun challenge for me to come up with creative, interesting, healthy, tasty recipes.
The short of it is that it isn't a lot cheaper to eat vegetarian if you're trying to be creative. I know lentils & legumes are cheap. But there are only so many times I want to eat lentils & legumes. :) I think I get points for creativity. But not for saving money.
Have you done any interesting experiments lately?
Any good recipes?

Real Ice Skating
Ever since reading about February and Uncle Wiggily, Eirena has been pretending to ice skate, on the pond in our house. And then she requested to go "real ice skating". So Dr. Daddy took her. She was pretty excited, if a bit like a new born foal at first.
After a few times around she gave Adisu a turn, but he decided it was no fun at all and preferred to sit on the bench and watch.
Eirena was still excited to do real ice skating though, and after figuring out that she balanced better when she kept moving,

character
The decor in our house veers toward "functional". Functional as in the cardboard box and rocking chair placed in front of the book shelves to stop the 7 month old menace from pulling all the books down.
Apparently he doesn't think much of my practicality....

The world of three year olds
Heading home from the doctor's office today, Eskil puked in the minivan. I think he gagged himself on his fingers. Eirena's car seat is at an angle so she saw him puke and she was pretty excited to tell me about it. And then she said, "boys and girls puke from their mouths; dogs and cats puke from their bums". I have no idea where she got that idea from! Adisu and I both corrected her the orifice from which puke emanates. And that started a lively discussion in the back seat about where one pukes and how. Simply charming. At least it wasn't at the dinner table- this time!

Along the Greenbelt
We took the kids for a walk along the Greenbelt- a trail that goes along a creek.
of course, we had to stop at the creek to let Eirena and Uc do their traditional rock throwing/fetching routine
