Last week two of my college roommates came to visit. We had a great time (at least I did!) reminiscing and catching up. Although they said they were just coming to visit me, I felt like they should have some authentic Texas experience to tell others about. Tex-mex food is a little too ubiquitous in the rest of the continental 48 and since I'm under "house arrest" after 8pm, discovering the "live music capital of the world" is challenging (and not really my cup of tea).
So... we went to a nearby town for authentic Texas BBQ. (My mom heard about this place on a tv show way over in India.- That's how famous it is!) The restaurant has been around for over 100 years. They are offended if you ask for sauce. You don't get forks, just a knife to slice some meat. You don't get plates, just the paper they wrap the meat in. You order right in front of the BBQ pit where you can see the flame and smell the smokey smell. (Vegetarians are allowed in, but escorted into the dining room before ordering. ;) )You choose your meat, get your plain white bread or crackers and chow. (They do have some sides like pickles and german potato salad or baked beans. ) For a meal that is solidly meat, it is really good. The meat is very tender and has great flavor. Of course, we ended up eating greens for the next couple of meals to make up for it, but it is a fun experience.
