The Problem With Reading Older Books

Eirena has a book called The Milly Molly Mandy Storybook. The stories were first published in the late 1920s and so some of the vocabulary used in them has a different meaning when the same word is spoken today.

There is a story about Milly Molly Mandy going to a party and there are several prizes. As it turns out the prize that the heroine wants is the reject prize, the prize for the person who didn't actually win. The term for that back then: booby. And apparently calling something a booby prize sounds very musical to a four year old's ear, who then likes to repeat it.
