Berji is our runt cat. Efendim is our Big Boy. We initially got Efendim to be a friend and companion for Berji while we were both at grad school all day. Berji was not impressed with us thinking that she was a cat (rather than a princess) in need of a companion (rather than slaves). So our two cats have lived in the same house, but generally avoiding each other as much as possible.
Since we have moved, we decided to put the cats in the walk-in closet in the bathroom at night to sleep. This way they theoretically sleep at night and are social during the day. So bed time goes something like this:
One of us gathers Berji up and carries Highness upstairs. The other one gets Efendim out of his hiding place and he dashes up the stairs in terror of seeing the light. Berji hisses and grumbles as he passes by.
We put Berji in the closet and she yowls and growls at being put in such an undignified location. Then we very carefully open the door a little bit and quickly force Efendim in while Berji waits to hiss and growl at him and whop him as he darts past her.
We usually get woken up once a night with them jumping at the door or scratching at it, trying to get out. And then there are the nights when Berji and Efendim start fighting. There was, when we moved in, a little bit of duct tape on the bottom of the door. The cats have removed this and there are little bits of duct tape and tufts of fur in the closet.
Sleeping during the night so they are social during the day? I think not. The life of living with cats.
